SCHOOLS GET HOOKED ON ANGLING

School kids from across the area have been taking the bait and landed themselves with an award in the process.

Bolsover District Councils angling coaches have been out and about in junior and primary schools, coaching the children the finer art and techniques associated with fishing. The youngsters took part in the Kingfisher Awards which teaches them about shotting patterns, how to tie hooks, floats, fish anatomy, pole rigs, plumb the depth, handle fish safely, weights and different types of baits to use.

The pupils did all the theory based knowledge about fishing in the classroom before taking this knowledge outside onto the bank side and putting this knowledge into practical use. The children that took part in the National Federation of Anglers (NFA) Kingfisher Awards, all received a badge and certificate and Bolsover District Council gave them a ‘Get Hooked’ hand towel and medal.

Bolsover District Council Chairman, Councillor Ken Walker presented the youngsters with their prizes and certificates and said, “Coaching fishing throughout the area has really got young people hooked and caught their imagination. It is a very popular sport and growing in popularity every day. Our coaches not only teach young people the finer points of angling, but also how to care for their environment as well. Well done to everyone who took part and I look forward to more young people taking up this sport.”
