PUPILS REELED IN BY FISHING BUG
Sixteen pupils from Park Junior School in Shirebrook have been 'hooked'
by the fishing bug as they took up the challenge of the Kingfisher
Award run by Bolsover District Council.
The pupils took part in the 10 week course which involved learning
the basic principles of fishing in the school classroom, before taking
part in the 'reel thing' were they put what they had learnt into practice
at Shirebrook Town Pond.
The classroom tutors, Tim Fairhurst NFA angling coach and volunteer
David Hayes taught the young children about shotting patterns, how
to tie hooks, floats, fish anatomy, pole rigs, plumb the depth, handle
fish safely, weights and different types of baits to use.
The pupils were presented with their NFA certificate and NFA Kingfisher
Badge and Get Hooked on Bolsover Coaching Scheme medal and towel by
the Chairman of the Council, Councillor Ken Walker
Speaking at the ceremony, Councillor Walker said, "It was really
pleasing to see so many youngsters taking part in the sport and we
want to encourage many more to join them. The courses are good fun,
but they are very educational and make the children learn about not
only the sport but the environment as well."
All the certificates and badges were provided by the National Federation
of Anglers (NFA). For further information on fishing courses held
by the Council please contact Alan Hayes on 01246 242321 or email
