Two
different approaches to fishing
I have often thought to myself that our wonderful sport, complicated though it
can sometimes be, is also very simple if you want it to be.
For instance, I and my friends have often fished with just a baited hook and nothing
else on the line.
On the other hand we can choose to fish with many different kinds of tackle for
a vast number of different species of fish on rivers, canals, lakes at commercial
fisheries and even in the sea.
Despite that, I think there are only basically two different ways to approach
fishing and the choice of those methods depends largely on your age, fitness and
temperament.
While I have fished from chosen spots for long periods without moving, usually
in spots that I know fish liked to live and feed in, and I often used groundbait
to attract fish into that spot by giving them samples.
I could, and sometimes did, fish for up to three days and nights without sleeping.
On the other hand, when I could still manage it there was nothing that I enjoyed
more than creeping and crawling from pool to pool, fly fishing for trout on one
or other of our world-famous Derbyshire fly fishing rivers.
And I have exhausted myself by trecking for miles across wilderness to reach remote
waters that few people have even seen, let alone caught fish from.
To my fitter, younger readers, I say this.
Don’t waste the good times by concentrating on soul-destroying things like
playing video games or taking drugs or squabbling.
Our sport offers a kind of heaven on earth to those who follow it quietly and
unobtrusively, but take my tip and don’t leave it too late.
